October 31, 2022 | Events, Jobseekers, Recent News

On Friday, October 28, 2022 the ‘Deadly Jobs’ Expo was held at VU Polytechnic’s ‘Skills Hub’ in Sunshine. This free event offered current employment opportunities to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities within the metropolitan area and beyond.

In collaboration with The Exchange and hosted by VU Polytechnic’s Skills and Jobs Centre, the expo showcased over 25 organisations across a wide range of industry sectors including:

      • Retail
      • Tourism / Hospitality
      • Building / Construction
      • Civil Construction
      • Big Build / Major Projects
      • Apprenticeships / Traineeships
      • Defence Forces
      • Victoria Police
      • Administration / Support
      • Healthcare
      • Sport / Recreation

By bringing together employers and community in a vibrant, face to face setting, the intention was to help fill current vacancies and provide future employment opportunities to those Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander candidates who identified as ‘ready’ to work. Attendees were provided with an opportunity to speak directly with employers, apply on-the-spot for both current and future roles including Apprenticeship opportunities, learn more about the training requirements of and pathways towards various jobs, and to tour facilities at the VU Polytechnic Sunshine campus.

Skills and Jobs Centre staff, along with Jobs Victoria’s Job Advocates and Indigenous Career Counsellors were also available onsite to work with candidates to determine what additional training or resources they may need in order to gain employment. Beyond the event, the Skills and Jobs Centre will continue to connect these individuals with suitable opportunities once they have fulfilled their job-readiness needs.
